Working Group

The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) operates under a tripartite leadership structure, with Liang-Kung Chen (Taiwan), Hidenori Arai (Japan), and Jean Woo (Hong Kong, China) serving as co-chairs. The organization’s governance includes a steering committee comprising seven members, each representing a participating country, ensuring balanced regional representation.

The steering committee convenes regularly, with a minimum frequency of annual meetings during the Asian Conference for Frailty and Sarcopenia (ACFS), though additional sessions are frequently conducted. These meetings facilitate comprehensive evaluation of sarcopenia research progress, clinical implementation strategies, and regional challenges across Asia.

The committee systematically reviews emerging evidence, updates diagnostic criteria, and formulates implementation guidelines tailored to the specific characteristics of Asian populations. AWGS also coordinates multi-center research initiatives, standardizes assessment protocols, and facilitates knowledge transfer among member countries.

Additionally, the steering committee oversees and supports special interest groups focused on specific aspects such as sarcopenic obesity. Through this structured approach, AWGS ensures consistent advancement in sarcopenia research while promoting standardized clinical practices across Asian healthcare systems.

The organization regularly publishes consensus statements, research recommendations, and clinical guidelines, reflecting the collective expertise and regional perspectives of its leadership structure. This collaborative framework enables AWGS to effectively address the evolving challenges of sarcopenia in Asian populations while maintaining scientific rigor and practical applicability in diverse healthcare settings.
